• When did Miyavi go solo?
Miyavi announced his solo career in September 2002 and released his first solo album soon after.
• Why did Miyavi go solo? What was he doing before this?
He went solo when his band, Due le quartz, broke up. For more information on pre-solo Miyavi (who we would refer to as Miyabi) check the Due le quartz section of the F.A.Q.
• So Miyabi and Miyavi are the same guy?
Yes.
• Are you sure he's a guy?
Yes.
• How come Miyabi was so visual and the most Miyavi does is wear panda suits?
How Miyavi markets himself now is much different than how he did pre-solo. For one, he was part of a band that had a leather & lipstick visual image. Now he's free to look however he wants, and obviously his eccentric/playful personality has shined through his wardrobe. There's no predicting with him, so don't be surprised if he does suddenly climb back into some bondage get-up for a photo shoot or two.
• Are the piercings real?
Yes.
• How come he won't tell us where his "secret piercing" is?
He obviously wants you to wonder. (For those who don't know, Miyavi claims to have one secret piercing. The location was censored where they were listed on his official site.)
• Are Miyavi's tattoos real? I heard he draws them on with sharpie markers.
Yes, they're all real. This rumor started when Miyavi himself claimed (as a joke) that he draws them on every morning. He had to clarify this in a recent interview. The tattoo on his right arm, which says 'tenjou tenka yuiga dokuson', was his first and remains his favorite. (Kommentar fra Noir - MENER at "tenjou tenka yuiga dokuson" er noget i retning af "I am the one an only" men måske blander jeg det sammen)
• Why does Miyavi have all of those tattoos?
He considers them a record of things he's experienced. He says when he wants to challenge himself, he gets a tattoo.
• What's the massive tattoo on his back?
That is the heart sutra. (Noir - Skal prøve at skaffe en oversættelse af det)
• What does "382" mean? I saw it on Miyavi's tour shirts and in other random places.
In Japanese, the numbers are written out with kanji that can be pronounced "mi", "ya", and "bi". It's like a numerical version of his name. (Kommentar fra Noir - Han har numrene tattoveret på sine højre 3 midterste fingre - Han gør selv grin med at tallene er hans fangenummer fra da han var i fængsel. (Og nej, han har ikke været i fængsel))
• Why does Miyavi's name change for every photo shoot?
Because he's trying to amuse you. Each name is a cheesy joke. It usually relates to his costume or the setting of the photo shoot. Miyavi jokes in one interview that his name was "Miyao" (pronounced Miy-ow) for the vampire photo shoot back in Shoxx April 2003 (check).
• Does Miyavi smoke?
He used to, but he's recently quit.
• What's that thing he always has in his mouth? It looks like a fake cigarette.
It's a device used to help you quit smoking. Apparently they come in different flavors. (Noir - AHA, han har den hele tiden i Oresama)
• Did Miyavi try to sue American fans for using his pictures?
No. This situation was a copyright infringement concern involving the record label (PS Company). Miyavi had nothing to do with it other than the fact that it's his likeness being protected by the copyright. For more information, see the explanation of media removal.
• So that means I can't use Miyavi's face on my website layout?
Correct.
• Well PSC can suck it! How about that?
It's your choice. If you want to be a disrespectful fan and disregard the media/image policy, further angering the label and thinning chances at decent relations between the fans and the artist management, go ahead. Just be warned: PSC has threatened to take legal action if problems of this variety don't cease.
• But I want to promote Miyavi! And pictures are the best way to do that!
Indeed. That's why PSC allows fans to post a certain set of Miyavi pictures on their personal, non-commercial websites to show him off. You can find the pictures on his official site, but you'll need to look through heavy amounts of regulations and disclaimers before you can use them. Translations of those documents can be found in the gallery section of night in girl.
• Is Miyavi gay?
No. He has clearly stated that he is more fond of the female species.
• Then why is he always kissing guys?
It's called fan service. There isn't much he won't do to get a rise out of the audience. He's known for getting people all worked up.
• Is Miyavi on drugs? He acts like it.
There is such a thing as being hyper active and seemingly crazy without the aid of speed.
• Is it true that Miyavi is Toshiya's brother?
No.
• Is it true that Miyavi is Toshiya's boyfriend?
No. See question 14.
• How old is Miyavi? He looks really young.
He was born on September 14, 1981. Do the math.
• What are the UKA books? Were they released before or after he went solo? Where can I find them?
The UKA books are two photo books Miyabi released during the Due le quartz era. They feature him in a hotel (everywhere from the bed to the stairs to the shower) and various other locations. They're out of print and extremely hard to find. If you're desperate for them, be prepared to drop around $400.00 when you find someone selling them. Check Yahoo Japan auctions.
• Has Miyavi released any photo books since he went solo?
Yes. "Miyavi Hajime no Photo Essay Shu WAGAHAI" (released Fall 03) and "Gakincho" (released Fall 04).
• What's Miyavi's real name?
He asks that fans who know his real name do not repeat it, as he wants to keep his private and public identities separate. Those who know his name should absolutely respect those wishes.
• But it says his real name on Night In Girl! Koda Imoutoko.
He was joking. That entire interview is full of ridiculous answers. It's supposed to be funny, so don't take it seriously.
• What kind of girls does Miyavi like?
The main qualifications seem to be "cute and independent". He also doesn't necessarily want girls with as many tattoos and piercings as he has.
• Where can I find Miyavi's music videos?
On August 21, 2004, a collection of Miyavi's indies PVs was released. (Noir - ASK MEEEE)
• Where can I buy Miyavi CDs, DVDs, etc?
We have an entire section here on this website dedicated to listing links where this sort of merchandise can be purchased. It's called "Buy Merchandise" on the navigation. There is also a thread dedicated to the same cause at the NNL forum. (Prøv www.nipponexport.com - men priserne er pænt...dyre - ISÆR deres shipping >_>)
• Which magazines can I find Miyavi in?
SHOXX, Arena 37c, UV, and FOOLSMATE are just a few of the magazines he frequently appears in. To find out when he will be featured, visit the magazine homepages via the links section. By doing so, you can usually get a preview of the photo shoot inside. (Noir - Han er også i flere G&L Bibles... Bl.a nr. 8 og 9 og vist også nr. 5)
• Is Oresama subtitled?
No.
• Is Oresama all region?
Yes. It will work on any DVD player.
• What's Oresama about?
Visit the "Oresama Movie" section of this website for cast, staff, summary, and more. (Noir - ellers spørg en af os der har set den ^^)
